The professionals I appreciate the most are TEACHERS. A teacher has not only gained a significant amount of knowledge, but is willing to help transfer that knowledge to others. I will always be grateful to others who have shared their knowledge and experience with me.
I am a left-brain kind of guy (natural attraction to math, the physical sciences and mechanical stuff), born without that artistic creative talent you all posses. However, I have developed a fascination with the mechanics of PROCEED (manufactured by Golden Artist Acrylics) line of decorative finisher products because these products are logical and make sense to me. I will never be able to use these products like you do but, to me, Proceed just makes sense and I would like to tell you why.
Some examples of PROCEED finishes may be seen in our Littleton Belcaro Paint store's PDPA Gallery.
- Most decorative finishing product lines I have investigated have too many different products. PROCEED is unique as it contains only a few different products (8 of them) that are either intended to be used by themselves or are designed to be intermixed with each other to make all of those other hundred different products that other companies make you buy. Just as there are an infinite number of colors you can make by intermixing the relatively few different pigment dispersions and colorants to get exactly what color you want, PROCEED allows you the same flexibility by intermixing their products to create exactly the finish that you and your customers want on the wall. You control the gloss, transparency, body, absorbency and aggregate volume. How intermixing one PROCEED product with another effects the combination is shown in this diagram.
- Several PROCEED products have the properties that allow you to apply two troweled coats directly to a level 1 drywall, without priming. Two coats and you are finished. Think of what that does to your labor cost and your value to the builder.
- Also, PROCEED has just developed several new texture products. They include Rough Glass Bead Texture, Rough Cracking Texture, Smooth Cracking Texture, Transparent Cracking Glaze, Cracking Size. In the past I have always been concerned with the cracking products we have had to offer. So many things can and do go wrong. These new cracking textures are so simple and beautiful. Learn more about these products HERE.
- If you have a moment, check out this dynamite discussion of PROCEED. Try to watch all the videos to see the real beauty of what can be accomplished. Maybe you will pick up a few tips on techniques.
Andre, focusing on creating another special wall finish.
- If you watched the videos in the PROCEED website you saw Andre Martinez. Not only is Andre an accomplished decorative finisher, he is the national president of the Professional Decorative Painters Association, PDPA. You really need to check out this new association of other folks in your trade across the nation. The value of sharing knowledge with other pros could be great to you.
- I am a real fan of Andre, primarily because he is so willing to share his knowledge with those seeking to elevate their decorative finishing craft. He is one of those TEACHERS I mentioned at the top of the page. Andre not only worked with Golden Artist Acrylics in developing the PROCEED line of products, he is involved in many avenues of education. You may want to explore how dedicated he is to helping others at his Principles of Applied Arts website or his School of Applied Arts website. If you ever get a chance to visit with him, I think your life will be enriched in some way.

So many decorative finishes need to be done on a smooth wall. Andre has developed a real nifty system for skimming a textured wall that he shares on the PDPA website. Rather that bring in someone else to get a textured wall smooth, why not just learn to skim coat the wall yourself (this link may take a little longer to load but it is worth the wait). You will make more money and skim coating gives you more experience using the trowel.
