There are times you may wish to smooth a textured wall before either hanging wallpaper or applying a troweled decorative finish. My friend, Andre Martinez demonstrates his very effective process skim coating in this video. The one very important step I strongly recommend before applying ANY water based product (including latex primer, wallpaper paste or latex paint) is to apply an oil based primer. Benjamin Moore has a very low odor, very fast dry oil base primer in their Fresh Start Primer family, product #20201. This oil base primer blocks any water from subsequent latex product from entering the porous drywall product used to skim the wall. I have seen too much water enter the drywall product and swell it to the point of forming big blisters in the final surface, thus the oil base primer.
