John Sez:

The Perfect Coat of Paint

Is this possible? The answer is, “Sorry, NO”. The word PERFECT probably should never be used to describe anything pertaining to paint. Perfect means 100% uniform in color, uniform in sheen, and no trace of texture from the applicator that applied the paint.

When we paint a surface we are using crude tools to apply a thin film of liquid. There are no techniques for applying it 100% uniformly with respect to thickness. The thickness variations can result in sheen variations. If the lighting and other conditions are just right, as found in a smaller, poorly lighted room, we might perceive what appears to be a perfect coat of paint. However, certain lighting conditions in a larger room with many windows may reveal some objectionable results in the finished coat.

For this reason, we strongly recommend using very flat paints on a ceiling, except for bathrooms and kitchens. Our matte finish on walls will provide the lowest sheen that can be scrubbed. When rolling we recommend frequently changing the direction of the paint roller, to avoid creating those obvious long “zebra stripes” up and down the wall. Shorter, more random roller marks, made in every possible direction will call less attention to the human eye. To minimize creating additional texture marks, use the shortest nap roller cover for the texture on the wall. Also, be sure that enough paint has been applied to a wall so none of the old color is showing through.

Once you have re-hung those beautiful works of art on the walls, any slight imperfections will be even less noticeable.
