Are Low VOC Paints Non-Toxic?

Some of our customers have mistaken the low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint products for being safe to us by people with chemical sensitivities. These new-age paints truly are more safe for the environment but not necessarily safer if you have a specific sensitivity to one of the other ingredients in the paint. These paints still contain latex, ammonia, and other materials that could cause a health concern if you have a specific sensitivity to them. Although they may be low or non-toxic to most people, it would be inappropriate to claim they have no toxicity to everyone.

I have a friend who cannot come in contact with banana and shrimp because of his specific allergy, but our paints do not bother him. Each person is different with possible sensitivities. If you are concerned that you may have a problem with a paint product, or any other construction material in your home you may want to check with your doctor before living with them. We would also be happy to make a small dried sample of the paint you are considering applying in your house. You could place that sample close to you while you sleep for a night and determine in the morning if you feel any ill effects.
